Broker's License-or Not? Isn't a
broker a better choice for you than a mere agent?
Owners, managers, and agents all can earn brokers' licenses. An
agent who has a broker's license is an associate broker. Although a
manager must earn a broker's license to manage, in most states an agent
doesn't have to earn a broker's license to continue selling. (A few
states require all salespeople to become brokers after a few years of
obtaining a salesperson's license.) If a salesperson doesn't have to
earn a broker's license, why does he go to the time and expense of doing
so? The broker's license is the best recognized differentiator of all
the designations.
The public believes someone with a
broker's license to have more knowledge and expertise than one who is a
mere agent. Is that true? Kind of. At least, an agent who earns the
broker's license thought enough about differentiating himself to spend
hundreds of dollars and thousands of hours becoming educated, and
countless hours preparing for and passing a broker's license exam. You
should respect agents who earn their broker's licenses for that that
reason. If it came down to choosing two agents with the same
qualifications, but one had a broker's license, I'd choose the agent
with the broker's license.
